Atlas Box & Crating has been able to save a million kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption on an annual level thanks to the latest smart LED lighting network from Digital Lumens.

According to a feature on Gigaom.com, Atlas Box & Crating recovered the invested cost in two years after installing Digital Lumens smart lighting in its 292, 000 square-foot warehouse.
Energy bills were drastically reduced and the company received tax incentives which have contributed to the cost savings.
“We set the parameters in the lighting and timing to track occupancy in each area… we have a lot of product out there and by using the occupancy sensors on the lamps I [sic] was many aisles that were heavily traveled in one part of the warehouse and another aisle across the warehouse that was also heavily traveled,” said Frank Tavares of Atlas Box & Crating.
“I can call up a schematic of all our fixtures, what’s running, what’s not and it gives me reports by the hour or minute. With that data I can do usage, cost and occupancy analysis,” he said.
Atlas had been using 1.3 million kilowatt-hours per year. Following the installation of the Digital Lumens system, the usage of energy is expected to cut 1 million kilowatt hours.
The lighting network also gives them the opportunity to attach other devices on the same network, thus enabling them to converge temperature/heating trackers or other type of equipment off the same network.
According to Brian Chemel, CTO and founder of Digital Lumens, their lighting network can be viewed as a Trojan horse for a whole specter of other devices that can be connected.
“Part of our advantage is that we use wireless for the last leg. We install a wireless mesh based on ZigBee so our physical footprint is pretty light, “said Mr. Chemel.
